Online Proctoring

Ensuring every assessment reflects each student's own knowledge and effort, with security, privacy, and fairness built in.

Assessment Integrity

[Organization Name] uses Proctorio, an online proctoring platform, to support the integrity of assessments. The platform provides flexible configuration options for different assessment types and is designed with a privacy-focused architecture that ensures assessment data is only accessible to authorized personnel within the institution.

Why Proctoring Matters

Proctorio supports our institution's commitment to:

Promoting academic integrity across all assessments

Honoring the work and effort of every student

Protecting the value of our degrees and accreditation

This page provides resources and support for all stakeholders, including students, instructors, staff, and parents or guardians.

About Proctorio

What is Proctorio?

When taking an exam in person, there is typically someone present to help ensure the rules are followed. Proctorio serves a similar role for online assessments.

During an assessment, Proctorio may:

Apply configured settings that restrict certain actions, such as navigating away from the exam

Record exam activity, including video, audio, screen activity, or browser events, depending on institutional settings

Use automated systems, including AI models, to identify specific actions or incidents that may require review

Important: Proctorio is not an automated decision-making tool. It provides information that authorized personnel review and evaluate. All decisions about grades or academic integrity are made by the institution.

How Proctorio Works

Proctorio operates directly inside your course, no separate account required. During an assessment:

1

Exam Setup

Before the exam begins, the instructor or exam administrator selects the appropriate settings based on the needs of the assessment. This includes choosing what may be recorded, any actions that may be limited, verification steps, and what activity is flagged for review.

2

Exam Launch

The exam is launched like any other assessment, but before seeing the exam, students are guided through a series of pre-checks to ensure they have everything needed to complete the assessment. These pre-checks also disclose which settings are enabled and confirm the device and environment are ready. For most assessments, all that is needed is the Proctorio Secure Exam browser extension, though other apps may be required or permitted.

3

Exam Monitoring

During the assessment, certain actions may be limited based on the exam settings. Recording and monitoring tools identify specific activities that may need review. In most cases, flagged activity is simply reported to the instructor or reviewer, though in some cases the session may end early. For institutions using Live Proctoring, a live proctor is also available to provide support or step in if needed.

4

Exam Submission

Students submit the exam as normal, which ends the proctoring session and stops all recording and monitoring. Students can disable or uninstall the extension at any time after the exam.

5

Exam Review

After the exam, recordings and any flagged activity are available to faculty or authorized reviewers at the institution. Only authorized staff can access this information. The institution is responsible for reviewing the data and making any decisions. Proctorio does not make decisions about grades or academic integrity.

Privacy & AI Transparency

Proctorio is built with privacy at its core and uses AI to assist, not replace, human judgment.

Data & Privacy

  • End-to-End Encryption: All data is encrypted on the device before it is sent anywhere. Only authorized staff at the institution can access it. Proctorio cannot view assessment data.
  • Local Processing: Data is processed on the device itself and is not sent to outside companies for processing.
  • No Data Sharing or Training: Assessment data is never sold, shared with third parties, or used to train AI models.

AI Transparency

  • Local Processing: All AI analysis is performed locally on the device and is not sent to third-party processors.
  • Optional Feature: AI analysis is optional and selected by the instructor or exam administrator for each assessment.
  • Human Decision-Making: AI does not make decisions about grades, outcomes, or integrity violations. All decisions are made by the institution.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is automated proctoring?

Automated proctoring uses your device's camera, microphone, and screen to record your exam session. Depending on how the exam is configured, AI may be used to identify and flag specific activity. After the exam, recordings and flagged activity are made available to the exam administrator for review.

Is someone watching me during my exam?

In most cases, no one is watching in real time. Proctorio records the session and makes data available for review after the exam ends. If live proctoring is enabled, an indicator will appear in the exam toolbar.

What data is collected?

The institution or exam administrator determines which features are enabled, including what activity is recorded and whether AI monitoring tools are used. Before the exam begins, all enabled recording options are displayed. Proctorio collects minimal data and does not collect or process biometric data.

How is data used?

Exam recordings and related data are securely delivered to authorized staff at the institution for review. Proctorio provides data only and does not make automated decisions. Any determination regarding academic integrity is made by the institution after reviewing the available information.

Who has access to the data?

Access to exam recordings and data is limited to authorized personnel within the institution. Proctorio does not access this data unless explicit permission is granted for troubleshooting purposes. Proctorio does not sell or share data with third parties.

Is Proctorio monitoring activity outside the exam?

No. The Proctorio extension is only active when accessing a Proctorio-enabled exam. It does not run outside of the exam environment. All Proctorio applications can be disabled or uninstalled at any time after the exam is completed.

What if I have concerns about proctoring?

Proctorio is a tool provided by the institution or exam administrator. Decisions about whether remote proctoring is required, and what alternatives may be available, are made by the institution, not by Proctorio. Contact the exam administrator to discuss any concerns or available options.

Who can I contact with questions?

Contact the institution with questions about exam data or accessibility accommodations. For questions related specifically to Proctorio's privacy practices or security measures, contact security@proctorio.com or accessibility@proctorio.com.

Admin Only Implementation Guide

This banner is for your web team only. Follow the steps below to customize and publish this page on your institution's website. Delete this entire yellow section (the <div id="implGuide">...</div> block) before going live.

1

Download this page

Download the complete HTML file to your computer. This is a single self-contained file with all styles and scripts built in — no additional files needed. Open it in any text editor to begin customizing.

Download index.html
2

Replace the institution name

Use find-and-replace to change every instance of [Organization Name] to your school's name (e.g., "Lakewood University"). It currently appears in the intro paragraph.
3

Apply your branding colors

Open the <style> block at the top of this file and edit the :root CSS variables. Swap in your school colors:
--primary: #27A534 (your main brand color)
--primary-light: #DDFED8 (light tint for backgrounds)
--primary-dark: #10451C (dark shade for text)
--accent: #FBBF24 (secondary highlight color)
All sections will automatically update because the page uses these variables throughout.
4

Add your logo

Find the Proctorio logo SVG in the hero section (the <svg viewBox="0 0 40 40"> block) and either replace it with your institution's logo image (<img src="your-logo.png">) or remove it entirely. You may also want to update the <title> tag in the <head> to match your page title.
5

Upload the page

Place this HTML file on your web server. Since the page is self-contained, only the single file is needed:
your-site.edu/proctoring/index.html
6

Choose your LMS quick-start guide

The downloadable resources section includes staff guides for Canvas, Blackboard Ultra, D2L Brightspace, and Moodle. Keep only the one that matches your LMS and remove the others so you do not confuse your staff. The student guide applies to all platforms.
7

Select your privacy template

Two privacy notice templates are included: FERPA (US institutions) and GDPR (EU institutions). Keep the one relevant to your region and remove the other.
8

Customize optional sections

Every section is self-contained and can be removed or reordered without breaking the page. Common customizations: add your own support contact info, update the FAQ with institution-specific questions, or remove sections that are not applicable.
Tip: If you embed this within an existing CMS template, you can pull just the content inside <body> and drop it into your template's content area. The CSS variables in :root should be moved into your site's stylesheet.
9

Delete this section

Once customization is complete, remove this entire implementation guide by deleting the <div id="implGuide">...</div> block. The comment markers (<!-- IMPLEMENTATION GUIDE -->) will help you find it.
